The Bushido code, I belleive. Die rather than surrender. It doesn't matter if the Japanese soldier dies a horrible, agonizing death, but just as long as he gets you, it would all be worth it. (Something like that...)

He means dying would have been a worthy price to pay to slay your enemy, by the Bushido code. It was a very zealous honor system.
